Research - Goodwin's Theory

In 1992, Andrew Goodwin published his theory on music videos in a book called Dancing in the Distraction Factory, published by Routledge. He had 6 points, of which he believed featured in every single music video.
  1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg. performance-based in rock; dance routines)
  2. Relationship between lyrics and visuals
  3. Relationship between music and visuals
  4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work
  5. There is frequent reference to the notion of looking, and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body
  6. There is often intertextual reference between films, TV programmes, and other music videos.
